Circumcision
Circumcision is an operation on the penis, in which the foreskin is entirely or partly removed.
The foreskin covers the glans. In most boys, the foreskin is tightly wrapped around or attached to the glans until the age of about 3 years. Parents should not try to pull back the foreskin, as this may cause injury.
When is circumcision necessary?
In many countries of the world, boys are circumcised for religious or cultural reasons. Circumcision is only medically necessary if the foreskin is too tight (phimosis) and is painful, and if it cannot be treated in any other way.
By the time the boy is an adolescent, the foreskin should separate from the penis and it should be possible to pull it back from the glans. If the foreskin is still too tight, an ointment can be applied to stretch it, or it can be removed by circumcision. You should talk to a doctor about this.
Reasons for circumcision
- If the foreskin is too tight (phimosis), urination can cause problems.
- It is then also difficult to wash the glans. This may lead to inflammation of the glans (balanitis).
- Having an erection (a hard penis), masturbation or sexual intercourse may be painful.
Problems with the foreskin may also occur in adult men. So circumcision may be required at any age. In most cases, the operation site will heal in two weeks.
Women
Girls and women are also cut. Because this is harmful for girls and women, it is also called female genital mutilation.

Beschneidung
Die Beschneidung (Zirkumzision) ist eine Operation am Penis, bei der die Vorhaut teilweise oder vollständig entfernt wird.
Die Vorhaut bedeckt die Eichel. Bei den meisten Jungen ist die Vorhaut bis ungefähr zum 3. Lebensjahr verengt oder noch mit der Eichel verklebt. Eltern sollten dann nicht versuchen, die Vorhaut zurückzuschieben. Das kann zu Verletzungen führen.
Wann ist eine Beschneidung nötig?
In vielen Ländern der Welt werden Jungen aus Gründen der Kultur oder der Religion beschnitten. Medizinisch notwendig ist eine Beschneidung nur, wenn die Vorhaut zu eng ist (Phimose), Schmerzen verursacht und sich nicht anders behandeln lässt.
Bis zum Jugendalter sollte sich die Vorhaut lösen und leicht bis hinter die Eichel zurückschieben lassen. Ist die Vorhaut dann immer noch zu eng, kann sie mit einer Salbe geweitet oder durch eine Beschneidung entfernt werden. Das bespricht man am besten mit einer Ärztin oder einem Arzt.
Gründe für eine Beschneidung
- Bei einer Vorhautverengung (Phimose) kann das Urinieren Probleme machen.
- Ausserdem ist die Reinigung der Eichel schwierig. Dadurch kann es zu Entzündungen der Eichel kommen (Balanitis).
- Die Erektion (steifer Penis), Masturbation oder der Sex können wehtun.
Probleme mit der Vorhaut können auch bei einem erwachsenen Mann auftreten. Eine Beschneidung kann deshalb in jedem Alter notwendig werden. In den meisten Fällen ist die Wunde von der Operation nach zwei Wochen wieder verheilt.
Bei Frauen
Mädchen und Frauen werden auch beschnitten. Weil dies für die Mädchen und Frauen schädlich ist, wird das auch weibliche Genitalverstümmelung genannt.
Weibliche Genitalverstümmelung ist eine schwere Menschenrechtsverletzung und ist in vielen Ländern gesetzlich verboten.
