How is sperm produced?
Sperm (semen) is produced like this:
- Many millions of sperms (sperm cells) are constantly produced in the testicles (1).
- The sperm accumulates in the epididymides (2) and seminal ducts (3).
- The sperm is carried through the seminal ducts (3) to the seminal vesicles (4) and the prostate (5). There it mixes with various fluids to form semen.
- If a man has an orgasm, the semen is propelled through the urethra (6) and out of the penis. This is called ejaculation.
When is a man fertile?
TSemen is produced for the first time during puberty. Most boys become fertile between 12 and 15 years of age. They can then father a child – even the first time they have sex.
Many men can produce sperm throughout their lives. However, their fertility declines as they get older.
