Partners in a relationship are not 2 identical persons. They are not the same, but have equal rights. This means that the limits and choices of each partner are respected.
A relationship is often unhappy when the limits of one of the partners are not respected.
Equal partners can help each partner to feel positive about himself or herself. They do not:
- want to have power over the other (they do not think they have more value than the other) or;
- need the approval or opinion of the other about everything (they do not think they have less value than the other).
Equal partners carry equal responsibility in a relationship. For example: they decide together whether they want to have children or not (family planning), if and what kind of contraception they want to use.
Sometimes inequality can lead to partner violence or sexually abusive behaviour.
الشركاء في أية علاقة ليسو فردين متطابقين. ليسا متماثلسن، بل لهما نفس الحقوق. وهو ما يعني أن الحدود والاختيارات لكل شريك يتم احترامها.
أية علاقة تكون في أغلب الأحوال ليست سعيدة عندما لا يتم احترام أي من الشريكين.
الشركاء المتساويين يمكن أن يساعد كل منهما الآخر في الشعور بإيجابية تجاه نفسه أو نفسها. فهم لا:
- يريدون السيطرة على الطرف الآخر (لا يعتقدون أنهم أعلى قيمة من الآخر) أو،
- يحتاجون إلى تصديق أو رأي الآخر في كل شيء (لا يعتقدون أنهم أقل قيمة من الآخر).
الشركاء المتساويين لهم نفس القدر من المسئولية في العلاقة. على سبيل المثال: هم يقررون معًا ما إذا كانا سينجبان أطفالًا أم لا (تنظيم الأسرة)، ما إذا كان وما هو نوع وسيلة منع الحمل التي يريدان استخدامها.
في بعض الأحيان عدم المساواة يمكن أن تؤدي إلى العنف بين الشريكين أو سلوك سوء الاستغلال الجنسي.
