Someone with HIV who does not get treated may have the following symptoms:
- First weeks: he/she may get symptoms resembling the flu, a rash or swollen lymph nodes.
- Then follows a period without symptoms.
- After some time (this can be 2 years or more) he/she may get new complaints and/or various new symptoms.
- HIV attacks the immune system. Without treatment someone with HIV will get AIDS after several years. The body’s immune system is so weak he/she will be prone to many other infections. These infections may lead to death.
The sooner an HIV-positive person is treated, the less serious are the consequences of HIV on his/her health. He/she can lead a normal life and even live as long as someone without HIV.
If someone with HIV is treated there is almost no risk that he/she will infect someone through unprotected sex.

La persoanele infectate cu HIV, dar care nu se tratează, pot apărea următoarele simptome:
- în primele săptămâni: bărbatul/femeia are simptome similare unei răceli, iritație sau ganglioni limfatici inflamați.
- urmează apoi o perioadă asimptomatică.
- după câtva timp (2 ani sau mai mult) bărbatul/femeia poate avea alte probleme medicale și/sau noi simptome diverse.
- HIV atacă sistemul imunitar. Dacă nu se tratează, bolnavul infectat cu HIV va face SIDA după câțiva ani. Sistemul imunitar al organismului este atât de slăbit încât bolnavul va face multe alte infecții. Aceste infecții pot fi şi mortale.
Cu cât mai repede începe tratamentul o persoană seropozitivă, cu atât mai puţin dăunătoare sănătăţii este o infecție cu HIV. Pacientul poate duce o viață normală și chiar poate să trăiască la fel de mult ca o persoană care nu este infectată cu HIV.
Dacă o persoană infectată cu HIV face tratament, scade aproape la zero riscul ca aceasta să infecteze o altă persoană prin contact sexual neprotejat.
Dacă aveți o bănuială că este posibil să fi fost infectat(ă) cu HIV, faceți un test. Adresați-vă unui medic pentru ajutor.
