Alguien con VIH que no recibe tratamiento puede tener los siguientes síntomas:
- Primeras semanas: puede tener síntomas parecidos a los de la gripe, una erupción cutánea o inflamación de los ganglios linfáticos.
- A continuación, viene un período sin síntomas.
- Después de algún tiempo (puede ser de 2 años o más) puede tener nuevos achaques y/o diversos nuevos síntomas.
- El VIH ataque al sistema inmunitario. Sin tratamiento, alguien con VIH desarrollará el SIDA después de varios años. El sistema inmunitario del organismo está tan débil que la persona será propensa a contraer muchas otras infecciones. Estas infecciones pueden provocar la muerte.
Cuanto antes se trate una persona VIH positiva, menos graves serán las consecuencias del VIH en su salud. Puede llevar una vida normal e incluso vivir tanto como alguien que no tenga VIH.
Si alguien que tenga el VIH recibe tratamiento casi no existe ningún riesgo de que vaya a infectar a alguien a través de sexo sin protección.

Someone with HIV who does not get treated may have the following symptoms:
- First weeks: he/she may get symptoms resembling the flu, a rash or swollen lymph nodes.
- Then follows a period without symptoms.
- After some time (this can be 2 years or more) he/she may get new complaints and/or various new symptoms.
- HIV attacks the immune system. Without treatment someone with HIV will get AIDS after several years. The body’s immune system is so weak he/she will be prone to many other infections. These infections may lead to death.
The sooner an HIV-positive person is treated, the less serious are the consequences of HIV on his/her health. He/she can lead a normal life and even live as long as someone without HIV.
If someone with HIV is treated there is almost no risk that he/she will infect someone through unprotected sex.
