يمنع التخدير الشعور بالألم أثناء إجراء العمليات، ويعرف أيضاً بالبنج. يستخدم طبيب التخدير عقاقير مختلفة للتخدير. يمكن تخدير مناطق محددة في الجسم (التخدير الموضعي) أو تخدير أجزاء من الجسم (التخدير الناحي) أو تخدير الجسم كله (التخدير العام). فقط في حالة التخدير العام يفقد المريض الوعي.

La anestesia se utiliza para evitar el dolor durante una operación. El anestesista o la anestesista utiliza para ello diferentes medicamentos. Es posible anestesiar zonas aisladas del cuerpo (anestesia local), regiones enteras (anestesia regional) o todo el cuerpo (anestesia general). La persona operada solo queda inconsciente en el caso de la anestesia general.
